History & Mission Statement

In April of 1997, Gary and Kathleen McNall said goodbye to Corporate America after 15+ years in various roles and hello to business ownership. Looking back now to that first issue, we certainly had a lot to learn, but we were determined to succeed, and with the help of our two boys, Chris and Zach, along with a welcoming community, and a lot of hard work, we have now entered our 11th year as publishers of The Express newspaper.
Our mission has always been to publish a newspaper for the community that is more of a compilation from the community and less about what we perceive the community to be. We believe our job isn’t to editorialize or push our own agenda but to provide a window into the community and by doing so leave a lasting memory of the area for future generations. Putting ourselves behind the newspaper instead of in front of it ensures that the newspaper itself is more important than the people behind it...and isn’t that a great recipe for longevity?
Publishing a weekly newspaper is not an easy task. Deadlines come weekly whether you are ready or not. There are pages to type, ads to sell, people to meet, meetings to attend, emails to answer, photos to take, papers to deliver, stories to write, labels to generate, copy to edit, etc. What keeps us going? Honestly, some days we ask ourselves that question. But when you are told how much happiness what you do brings to both young and old, and those in between, you take a deep breath, smile, and start working on next week’s issue.
We thank our readers, contributors, advertisers, family and friends for their non-wavering support and look forward to the continued publication of The Express newspaper for many years to come.
A wise woman once told us that life’s interruptions aren’t interruptions at all, they are just life. We try to remember that, and live by that philosophy, as we balance family and a demanding work schedule as so many of us do each day.
We ask that our Express friends continue to help us fulfill our mission by their support as a subscriber, advertiser and contributor. With articles and pictures coming from all ends of the community, this newspaper will truly be a community newspaper - one that makes the community proud.

Tell a friend about us!
 Kathleen and Gary
